realized thursday when i was getting my hair cut that i actually did know the 19 year old girl who died in the paso robles earthquake. she was a receptionist at the salon...

i knew the map was overlapping! i just didn't really care, so i figured i'd leave it up for a day and then delete it. :oP

today was interesting at the school. there was supposed to be a substitute so the teacher could go to a meeting, and they didnt show up. soooo i taught the kids at last minute notice. they weren't even the normal kids from her classroom- they were a mixed group from all the 1st grade classes.

also, things happened that i can't talk about here, but if you know me really, i'll probably tell you about.

tough day, but its all good

next time i'm feeling rich, i will go to some antique stores and drool on plates like these.

i got a book from scholastic book orders-- lighthouse: a story of remembrance, by robert munsch. it made me cry

from ananova.com

lesson of the day:
i have no time to be sick, or to have fun
only time for work

Sunday, January 25, 2004

i took my favorite boyfriend out on a date this afternoon. we went to see big fish, which was quite good. and as always, ewan mcgregor was oh so cute. i think i'll want the dvd when it's out. (take note: i'd also like shawshank redemption please)

i like books. i want to buy like 50 books right now, but i limited myself to eight. (ordered them friday.) aren't i responsible?
here is what's coming in the mail:

Arnie the Doughnut by Laurie Keller
The Scrambled States of America by Laurie Keller
Enemy Pie by Derek Munson
Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback
When I Was Little: A 4-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth by Jamie Lee Curtis
Rosie and Michael by Judith Viorst
The Listening Walk by Paul Showers
A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech

Coincidentally, the total cost of these books was 56.56- exactly 56 cents more than i earned tonight babysitting. :o)

next on my purchasing list will be some math manipulatives from this place. i have couponage.

i almost threw up last night, trying to drink my nyquil. i HATEHATEHATE that stuff. could i take shots of vodka instead?

its not that i hate all liquid medicines. i thought that carolyn's generic pepto bismol was suprisingly okay. i secretly like the tangy weird cherry taste of my expectorant cough syrup i'm taking during the day.... but something about nyquil makes me want to yak- i think its the sickening sweetness. i have dayquil in liquicap form, but i didn't see that for nyquil.

i also am sleeping basically sitting up. i haven't had to do this for a few years, but it helps with bad coughing. the setup is two pillows on top of each other, plus another pillow laying against them at an angle. it keeps the phlegm from settling. yummy!!! i also sleep with kleenex and a waterbottle in my bed for easy access. i'm waiting for the time when i drink water at 4 am and forget to screw the cap on. then, i'll have to protest loudly that NO i did not wet the bed.

a few days ago i realized that my little container of baby powder that i use in my hair sometimes is expired.

yes, it expired in december
december 1984...

today i went on a field trip with the 1st graders to see monarch butterflies. they come to the area to mate every winter.

you can imagine that this fact made things fun
like when the park ranger mentioned something about mating, which confused the kids. i asked the teacher i work with, "so, are we learning about mating tommorow?"
or when two butterflies were kinda doing their thing on the ground and a six year old shouted, "look! two butterflies are fighting!"

knock knock

who's there?

viral bronchitis!

i'm glad my parents didn't name me blanche. that would've SUCKED.

while babysitting, i read a journal article, wrote an art lesson plan, messed around online, and ate dinner. i am proud. i think that i will now fall asleep on the couch until it is time to go. goodnight

Monday, January 19, 2004

i'm currently doing the easiest type of babysitting: when the child is asleep when you get there and still asleep when you leave. it makes me feel a little guilty that i get paid for sitting in someone elses house and doing my homework or surfing the web.
:o) oh well! it sure beats screaming, teething babies

roomate 4 has suddenly started playing harmonica. this is very annoying.
so now i hear:
clarinet
trumpet
guitar
baaad singing
violin
harmonica
coming from the other room. aaaaaaaaaah!! and carolyn's opera singing too... but she's okay. as long as you only do one musical thing and not 5.

roomate #3 and her stinky boyfriend are currently defiling my couch by sweating on it, playing with each other's faces, and lovingly singing "cotton eyed joe" the line dancing hit to each other. they amaze me with the dirty strangeness of their love.

also, raymi quoted two lines from "tiny cities made of ashes" by modest mouse in her blog. this excited me.

i'm gonna hit you in your face
i'm gonna punch you in the glasses

i debated for a while if i should link to raymi's blog or not. i didn't. but i like her anyways

i'm graduating in march. done with cal poly in june.

i need a web site.

a real one, that you pay for and stuff. except that the paying for it wouldn't be cool. personally, i think ben and i should share because he's smart and does cool stuff. and yes. my website could be www.somethingawesome.com/sarah or www.somethingevencooler.com/flibbit. the possibilities go on and on.

and when i'm a teacher, i'm going to have a blog for my class. a blog with homework assignments on it or something wonderful like that. my elementary school had a phone number that you could call and it told you the homework for your class. i need a homework blog, cause then i'd be a little bit cooler.

next week there is only three days of school. tuesday i'm going to start teaching a small group of struggling readers. wednesday i'm going to teach a math lesson, and then we go on a field trip (!!!) to see butterflies. thursday i'll do the reading group and teach an art lesson, perhaps. exciting and scary!

i think i'm also going to make a lesson plan about acronyms, because some of the kids are interested in them. (like U.S.A. or P.E.) another acronym: E.D.C.

so lets see here... i have 4 lesson plans to write for next week for student teaching. i also have a lesson plan due in one of my classes. i don't like writing lesson plans because it takes me forever and a half. real teachers don't write lesson plans anyways.

Wednesday, January 14, 2004

today, one of the first graders patted my belly and asked me if i'm having a baby.

hm.... NO.

its chocolate truffles and bloating. but mostly truffles.

i've been in tons of classrooms, but today was the first time i've taught a formal lesson in front of an entire class, by myself. it was funny- my height gave me problems because i have to bend over to even touch the desk that my materials were sitting on. and you can bet i couldn't read any of my lesson plan from that distance, either!

it went okay- the class has some problem students and the teacher said i dealt with them very well. my problem was more with the not being able to reach things and forgetting to say a few things since i couldn't glance at my notes. but i didn't die! and i bet the kids thought everything was fine.

my university supervisor says he'll be coming to observe me teaching once a week. that makes me nervous.

i have a desk in the classroom. today i brought in bookends, a pencil cup, picture frames, a paper in/out tray, etc. it's quite exciting. and the teacher gave me a cute notepad and wrote "good morning, sarah!" on it. awwww

Sunday, January 11, 2004

ok ben, you were right.

Saturday, January 10, 2004

so i just noticed meghan's comment about wanting to hear about student teaching more.

some thoughts so far:
--the class only has twenty kids in it but 20 first graders is SO MANY. even though like 2-5 of them have been absent per day.
--i bought hand sanitizer because these children teem with germs and green snot and yes. snot. i'm always reminding them to blow their noses.
--i read the book "the paper bag princess" by robert munch friday and they loved it. i'm going to brag a little here, but i am very good at reading out loud, and it makes a big difference. that and an exciting, funny story. they were the quietest i've ever seen them.
--first graders constantly interrupt class with random comments about what they ate for dinner, what they saw while driving to school, etc. i do not know exactly how to handle this.
--there are two children in the class who need lots of help. neither of them would qualify for special ed, but very much need one on one learning. meanwhile there is another child who needs no help but qualifies for special ed. this is poopy.
--one child alternates between hugging me, giving me candy, asking for my phone number, and then throwing things, disobeying me, and lying to me. all while being darn cute. the teacher says "isn't she wonderful? But I don't know what to do about her."
--it is very very hard for me to come up with outfits where my shirt and my pants overlap. all my clothes are too short and it isn't fun.
--teachers say things during lunch time that aren't always very nice.

someone at my apartment got flowers today. it wasn't me, it wasn't carolyn cause her boy is in new zealand, it wasn't roomate 3 because her boyfriend is a smelly man who smells and sweats.

it must be roomate 4! shes the one who always said she wasn't going to date and didn't want a boyfriend. but now she has a man, and makes comments like "he's so hot!" somehow this has made her seem like more of a real person.

Friday, January 09, 2004

this morning i woke up at 7.40 instead of 6.50 (whoops)

i was on time, but i ended up eating tuna fish and a doughnut for breakfast.

Wednesday, January 07, 2004

i feel sorry for male teachers. they hardly ever seem to eat in the staff room with all the women- they hide somewhere instead. too much concentrated female gossipness. and talking about cute movie starness. and LOUDNESS.

Tuesday, January 06, 2004

i now know where our saying, "monkeys are bad people" comes from.

after two days i can finally type in the address to my blog and not get redirected to blogger.

i had a lonnng day today. even though i got out of my computer class at 7:30 instead of 9 pm, i still had 9.5 hours of class. my first day of student teaching went pretty well. i didn't do that much, mostly sat in the back and watched or walked around and helped the little people at their desks. one of them was upset today and crawled all over the floor and threw things. it was interesting.

Monday, January 05, 2004

when i type my blog address in it takes me to blogger. arg!

Saturday, January 03, 2004

well! that was the longest i've gone between posts for a while.
i have been spending copious amounts of time with ben, which was fun
and i've been eating a lot of chocolate.

my roomate carolyn just came home, and she CUT OFF HER HAIR! we started growing it out together close to two years ago. wheras my hair is now the longest its been since i was 17, she now has gone back to our previous short hairstyleness. i think she looked better with it longer. or shorter and spiked like it was when we were freshmen. hmmmmm.....

when i eat apples it makes me hungrier. i hate that.
